It’s that time of year again! Yay! Apple crisp is one of my favorite ways to eat apples!
This apple crisp is gluten and dairy free. It can easily be made with regular oats and real butter. Either way this Apple crisp is so satisfying!
I usually use Gravenstein apples to make this apple crisp. I make this when I have an abundance of apples and that is when my biggest apple tree, Gravenstein, is in full production.
That being said, I know this apple crisp recipe would be delicious with any type of apples!
I also use this same recipe for pear crisp and peach crisp! I just replace the five cups of apples for five cups of the fruit of choice. So this recipe is great to have on hand for many different types of fruit dishes!
Making Apple Crisp
Start off your apple crisp by slicing five cups of apples. I like to leave the peel on the apple for more nutrition. Most people peel the apples before they start slicing. The peels don’t seem to bother me at all or my family and it adds more fiber and nutrients to your crisp!
I always double this recipe and bake it in a 9 by 13 inch casserole dish. An 8 by 8 works well if you are not doubling this recipe. Butter dish and add sliced apples. Sprinkle with 2 to 4 tablespoons of sugar depending how sweet or sour your fruit is. Give it a quick stir and set aside.
Next, you will place brown sugar, oats, flour, cinnamon, salt and nutmeg in a medium sized bowl. Stir together well and then add in cold chopped butter. I use vegan butter. Blend in the butter with a pastry blender or a fork until it is all crumbly.
Finally, it’s ready to bake. I don’t set a timer. It’s kinda a bad habit I guess although I don’t typically burn stuff. I just check on it periodically and go off of smell. You will know this is done baking when it is bubbly and slightly browned on top. If you stick a fork in it, the apples should be tender, not hard or mushy.
I hope you enjoy this apple crisp! It warms the soul and is such a comfort food in my house. Hope you feel the same!
Here are some products I have linked for you! My Le Crueset casserole dish is my favorite and in white would make anything look great! I need the Anchor Hocking with the lid though!
