Many people don’t know the truth about eggs. The nutrition facts about eggs that is. Buying eggs at the grocery store or a farmers market or even from a friend doesn’t mean you are getting the most nutritious eggs. You maybe thinking you are getting good eggs from healthy happy hens when that just might not be the case!
That being said, local eggs are always better than store bought. They are much fresher and it’s always better to buy local.
So What Is The Difference?
Pasture raised hens or true free range hens make the most nutritious eggs! They have: seven times more beta carotene, three times more vitamin E, two times more omega 3 fatty acids, 2/3 more vitamin A, 1/4 less saturated fat, and 1/3 less cholesterol then your typical organic eggs or “cage free eggs”!
I don’t know about you, but to me that is definitely much more nutritious and worth the money! All of that extra nutrients minus the bad fats makes pasture raised or true free range eggs a superfood!
While the eggs you buy at the store say “free range” or “cage free” what does that mean exactly? All it means is that the hens are not in cages. They are able to roam a large barn or inside space and may have a small area outdoors to roam. Most likely, there is a ton of chickens in this space. They don’t get to forage and eat plants and bugs like a true free range or pasture raised chicken does.
What does omega 3 enhanced eggs mean? This simply means that the hens are fed a significant amount of flaxseed. This is unregulated to my knowledge and these hens are usually in cages.
Certified organic eggs are regulated to make sure they are antibiotic and hormone free, but this does not mean they get a significant time outdoors. Nor, do you know how much space they have.
What Should I Be Looking For?
Above all, if you can get your hands on organic pasture raised eggs or true free range eggs this is the best for you and for the hens. These eggs are the healthiest and a true superfood! If they are certified organic you know they are being regulated. If they’re pasture raised hens then you know they are the healthiest hens. They are able to forage and eat a variety of greens and bugs!
If you can’t find both pasture raised eggs and certified organic the next best choice is local pasture raised or true free ranged eggs!
